If you’re struggling with your Amazon FBA product research, then don’t worry you’re not alone – finding a product to sell on Amazon can sometimes feel like an impossible task for everybody, especially when they’re just getting started.
If you’ve been searching for a product for a while then hopefully you already know that any decent opportunity that you find, must satisfy 3 essential pieces of criteria:
- Monthly sales revenues of 3x your monthly profit target
- A profit margin of 30% before advertising, and
- Provides an opportunity for you to improve upon the existing offering.
The first 2 of these can easily be checked using Helium 10’s X-Ray tool & their profit calculator, but what about the third?
Differentiating your product offer is undoubtedly the area that beginners find the most challenging, because sometimes it’s just not obvious about what can be improved when glancing at a product on Amazon… UNLESS you know about a little known product research secret that also uses Helium 10, that will literally hand ideas to you on a plate – ideas that nobody else will have thought of yet because they don’t know where to look… or what even to look for.

Finding ways to improve an Amazon product offer (easily!)
If you take a look at 99% of YouTube videos on Amazon product research, you’ll be told to read through a product’s customer reviews and look for improvement points that way. Even though that definitely is something you can do, it’s quite a basic technique that most people already know, so any idea that you do come across from reading negative reviews has probably been seen and acted upon by plenty of others already.
So, to avoid thinking of an improvement opportunity that other sellers have already thought of, my advice is to dig a little deeper when doing your product research and do what most of your competitors would never think to do when looking for profitable products – which is to look up what your target customer is searching for when they’re on Amazon.
Now that might sound kinda strange, but let me explain:
Let’s say that we want to sell a massage gun on Amazon. By reading through every massage gun’s product reviews, you’re probably going to come up with ideas such as ‘better battery life’, ‘more powerful’ and so on – stuff that’s pretty obvious and others will be aiming to do already. Instead, what you could do is look at what customers are specifically searching for in the search bar on Amazon when typing in ‘massage guns’, for example “massage gun with carry case” or “massage gun for women”. Looking at this data could give you clues of sub-niches that are high in demand but are underserved on Amazon… or even non-existent.
So how do you find out what Amazon customers are searching for?
Looking up what customers are searching for might sound like a tricky & stalker like task to do… but, with the help of Helium 10 it’s super easy, because Amazon publishes all of the information that we need and gives it to Helium 10 to digest and show to people like us.
All you need to do to get this data is to first download and install the free Helium 10 Chrome extension, create an account using my discount link, and then search for any product that you’re interested in selling on Amazon. Once you’ve finished typing in the search bar, you should see a new pop up box with a load of suggestions based on what actual customers are searching for – some of which may new ideas that aren’t available on Amazon yet.
As an example, here you can see I’ve typed in the word ‘duster’ into the Amazon search bar, and Helium 10 has given lots of related search term ideas and information on the number of customers actually searching with them, which gives you a sense of the level of demand.
From an initial idea of selling a ‘duster’, we’ve now got some possible sub-niche ideas related to dusters that have demand and that we can look into further, and the exciting thing is that some of these sub-niches might not have any competition or even be available on Amazon at all, presenting us with an immediate opportunity to stand out from the crowd and generate some decent sales on Amazon.
But don’t stop there, cos the real gold is found by digging deeper and using Helium 10’s Magnet Tool, which will show you way more ideas that you can explore further.
Using Helium 10’s Magnet Tool to Find More Product Ideas
To use Magnet, all you need to do is head to Helium10.com, log in in to your account, and then open up ‘Magnet’. There, you should type in the name of the product you’re thinking of selling – in our case, say ‘massage gun’, and press ‘get keywords’.
What Helium10 is then going to do, is load up all of the search terms related to ‘massage guns’ that customers are using on Amazon, and show them to you in a huge list. This list will often be HUGE and contains lots of irrelevant results, so what you’ll want to do is filter that down by changing:
- the word count to a minimum of 2
- The match type to ‘organic’
- The minimum search volume to 200 (so we know there’s at least some demand for our improvement idea).
Once you’ve done that, the list of search terms should be much more manageable, and now all you need to do is read through the list and see if you can see any customer search terms that suggest an improvement opportunity that you can pounce on. Tip: order the keywords from high to low in terms of search volume, to speed up the process.
Taking a look at our list, we see lots of search terms that are pretty obvious: massage gun, back massager etc.
However, once we get away from the super high volume keywords, there’s one gem that jumps out, because it’s something that I hadn’t seen before: ‘Massage gun with usb c charger’.
It’s got 1,924 searches a month for it, and when we look on Amazon for it, we can see that it doesn’t appear anywhere!
So that means 1,924 people a month are looking for a massage gun that you can charge with USB c… and they’re leaving disappointed. There’s our opportunity to sell a product that’s improved versus what’s currently on offer, that also has demand – sweet!
Summary
Without a doubt, this technique is one that’s helped me massively over the years, and amazingly most people still don’t know about it or use it – so make sure you do.
